AREA-CREB® Consolidation Plan

Posted on November 15, 2022 by AREA Communications

The AREA and CREB® Board of Directors are pleased to announce the adoption of a consolidation plan that achieves the goal of one Alberta membership for CREB® members.

This shared future vision combines the core strengths and capabilities of both member service organizations.

A motion to consolidate has been approved by both Boards. CREB® members will be asked to approve this exciting plan at a Special General Meeting (SGM) on March 15, 2023.

If the plan is approved by members, AREA and CREB® will implement plans to consolidate by Dec. 31, 2023. CREB® members will benefit in two main ways:

  1. Reduced Fees: A consolidation would reduce operational duplication and overhead costs between the two organizations. Those savings would be passed directly to the members.
  2. Choice: Members will be able to choose between two tiers of service – premium and core – allowing them to prioritize what matters most to them.

Signature CREB® events, such as the CREB® Forecast, will continue, and a localized Calgary-region voice on industry issues will be organized through a Foothills Region Premium Services Advisory Group, initially comprised of the existing CREB® Board of Directors.

CREB® CEO Alan Tennant will join the existing AREA executive team in a senior executive role, to oversee the smooth transition of CREB® staff and systems into AREA.

The two Boards of Directors are working through the details of the proposal. We are committed to sharing the fulsome details with members in early January.

Chair, AREA Board of Directors

What leadership are saying about the consolidation plan:

“We are so excited about this bold new path,” says CREB® Chair Lorna Hamm. “It’s a moment of mixed emotions to move toward winding down an organization that has meant so much to our industry, but also a real sense of optimism about all the future possibility as we usher in a new compelling set of benefits for the wider membership.”

“This is a historic moment for the real estate industry,” AREA Chair David P. Brown says. “Being able to unite two respected, influential voices in the industry will make our association stronger. AREA is looking forward to making the necessary governance changes to ensure CREB® members are well supported in this transition.”

“We couldn’t be more pleased about the opportunity to welcome the talented CREB® team into our organization”, says Brad Mitchell, AREA CEO. “Our top priority is to ensure no interruption to member services through this process, and I have full confidence in the AREA and CREB® teams to make that happen.”

“What a special moment for our collective membership,” Alan Tennant, CREB® president and CEO says. “Our visions are aligned about the best way forward and that collaboration has opened the door to this incredible new opportunity. Through the merging of our team talents and core systems, we will be well-positioned to deliver member value like never before.”

CREB® members will be asked to approve this exciting plan at a Special General Meeting (SGM) on March 15, 2023. There are many moving parts, and so please know that we will provide comprehensive details to members on all aspects of the consolidation plan in January, well in advance of the CREB® SGM.

Our membership work and live in Alberta, which we acknowledge as the traditional and ancestral lands of many peoples presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8 – namely the Blackfoot Confederacy (Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika), the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda and the Tsuu T’ina Nation, and the Métis People of Alberta. We recognize the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today, and those who have gone before. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those on whose territory we reside.
