Charlie Ponde Memorial Scholarship

The Charlie Ponde Scholarship program was created to help the children and grandchildren of an Albertan REALTOR® (18 and older) to ensure a bright future for the real estate industry by supporting and inspiring the next generation of REALTORS®.

We will be awarding two Charlie Ponde Memorial Scholarships based on the individuals explanation of why they want to become a REALTOR® and their involvement in the community. Learn more below!

$1,500 towards licensing costs

These funds can be directed towards covering the expenses associated with obtaining your real estate license, such as exam fees, coursework, study materials, and registration costs.

AREA licensing materials up to $2,200

Funds to cover your Fundamentals of Real Estate course and any practice course up to a maximum of four.

Scholarship Criteria

What makes this scholarship unique is that it goes beyond academics, it comes down to your passion for real estate and meeting RECA’s eligibility criteria.

  • Applicants must be a child or grandchild of an AREA member.
  • Applicants must be 18 years old or older.
  • Applicants are asked to share a written or video explanation of why they want to pursue a career in real estate.
  • Applicants must acknowledge that they would meet RECA’s eligibility criteria, including having graduated high school (or being currently enrolled in grade 12 with a consistent academic record).

Selection Criteria

Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of the explanation and their involvement in the community (fine arts, athletics, charitable works, and volunteerism).

About Charlie

Charlie Ponde never took on a task that he wasn't passionate about and it was no different when it came to real estate.

Charlie first became a REALTOR® in 1992, a significant departure from his prior career in India. From the start, Charlie demonstrated his dedication and enthusiasm for helping clients. Charlie was also actively involved his community.

Small in stature, but not in heart, Charlie embodied the best virtues of the REALTOR® Code, always treating his peers and clients with kindness, integrity and respect. He was instrumental in real estate advocacy efforts for decades and was a champion for REALTOR® professionalism and education.

Charlie was recognized as an honorary life member of both AREA and the REALTORS® Association of Edmonton for his many contributions over his 30 years in real estate.

After Charlie lost his battle against cancer in October 2022, the AREA Board of Directors decided to honor his legacy through supporting future generations of REALTORS®, establishing a new scholarship in his honor.

Our membership work and live in Alberta, which we acknowledge as the traditional and ancestral lands of many peoples presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8 – namely the Blackfoot Confederacy (Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika), the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda and the Tsuu T’ina Nation, and the Métis People of Alberta. We recognize the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today, and those who have gone before. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those on whose territory we reside.
