Al Larson Scholarship Recipients

Posted on January 23, 2018 by AREA Staff in News

Two Al Larson Memorial Scholarships of $2,500 are awarded annually to children and grandchildren of an Alberta REALTOR® having achieved first-time acceptance and entering their first year of study:

  • One student accepted into a university program.
  • One student accepted into a college or technical school program.

Scholarships are awarded based on a combination of a student's performance in academics and extracurricular activities (i.e. fine arts, athletics, charitable works, volunteerism).

University Award: Trudie Cheung

Trudie Cheung is the proud recipient of AREA's Al Larson Memorial Scholarship for a University program.

A high achiever in high school, Trudie was involved in various extracurricular activities including musical involvement in choir and band programs. She was also an executive member of EquaLearn Foundation, working with volunteers to tutor underprivileged children.

Trudie, daughter of AREA member Sandra Shun-Chi Lam, will be pursuing a degree in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto, with hopes of enrolling in the Biomedical Systems option after her first two years.

Trudie has a particular interest in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and hopes to become involved with future research in that field.

College/Technical School Award: Emily Gour

Emily Gour is the proud recipient of the Al Larson Memorial Scholarship for a College/Technical School program.

Granddaughter of AREA member Bonnie Lund from Grande Prairie, Emily is enrolled in the Dental Assisting program at SAIT Polytechnic.

Following her graduation within the Dental Assisting program, Emily hopes to work with children to teach them about oral health and how to maintain their own teeth. She also hopes to be able to travel to developing countries and help those less fortunate with their oral hygiene.

Our membership work and live in Alberta, which we acknowledge as the traditional and ancestral lands of many peoples presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8 – namely the Blackfoot Confederacy (Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika), the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda and the Tsuu T’ina Nation, and the Métis People of Alberta. We recognize the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today, and those who have gone before. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those on whose territory we reside.
